ABSTRACT:
Background: WHO estimates that there are 32 million people with diabetes mellitus in India in the year 2009, which is projected to rise to 80 million by the year 2030. Type 1 diabetes mellitus typically affects younger individuals. Type 1 diabetes usually begins before age 40, although there are exceptions. In the United States, the peak age at diagnosis is around 20. Type 1 diabetes is associated with deficiency (or lack) of insulin. Objectives:1. To assess the level of knowledge of patients with diabetes mellitus regarding self administration of insulin. 2. To assess the effectiveness of structure teaching programme on self administration of insulin through pre and post test among patients with diabetes mellitus. 3. To find out the association between the level of knowledge on self administration of insulin among patients with diabetes with selected demographic variable. Material and Methods: A Quantitative Research approach, Pre experimental, one group pre and posttest design was used for this study. Data was collected from 100 Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus patients of selected hospital. Purposive sampling was used for selecting the samples. The investigator developed Structured Teaching Programme with regard to the Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus. Structured knowledge questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: In post-test 90% study participants had adequate knowledge, and 10% had moderately adequate knowledge. The overall analysis of knowledge that the pretest mean is 6.4 and that of posttest is 17.3. The calculated ‘t’ value is 32.5, which is higher than the table ‘t’ value 3.175 at 99 df with 0.001 level of significance. There was extremely significant difference between pretest and posttest levels of knowledge among diabetes mellitus patients regarding self administration of insulin. Conclusion: The study gave an excellent experience for the investigator. The overall experience of conducting study was Satisfying and enriching. The respondents were happy with the intervention they have received. The result of the present study on knowledge can be gained through STP.
